Lester B Pearson Scholarship - University of Toronto
This document is originally written by Mubtaseem Zaman (B.A.Sc. in Engineering Science, Lester B. Pearson Scholar, University of Toronto).
All the instructions are clearly stated in the scholarship website.
I would be reiterating those in a simplified manner.
Eligibility:
You CANNOT be a Canadian citizen.
You MUST require a study permit to study in Canada.
You must be either in the last year of your high school*, that is, you are in 12th grade/ 2nd year of college, or you are applying in the same year you graduated from high school.
*Colleges in Bangladesh are referred as high schools in North American education system. I’ll be also using the term ‘high school’ to refer ‘colleges’ of our country.
Deadlines:
In the scholarship website, you’ll find two deadlines.
School nomination deadline: Your nominator* must nominate you by this date.
Student application deadline: You must complete the scholarship application package sent to you by this date.
University application deadline: You must complete the separate application package for U of T.
*Nominator must be your Principal/Vice-principal/ Guidance Counselor.
Initial steps:
Ask your high school Principal/ Vice-Principal/ Guidance Counselor to verify your high school first by providing necessary information. The nominator must fill out this form.
DO NOT miss out information for the verification application.
Be patient, verification takes time.
If your nominator does not hear back from University of Toronto (UofT) within 2/3 weeks, ask him/her to email the scholarship committee for updates at pearson.scholarship@utoronto.ca.
Your nominator will receive a form to nominate and recommend you for the scholarship, once the verification is successful.
ENSURE that your nominator puts the right information about you, especially, your name and email address.
Your nominator also has to write a recommendation letter for you before submitting the nomination package to UofT.
Once UofT receives the nomination package, they will send you a link to your email address. This link will connect you to the webpage, where YOU will fill out the scholarship application package.
Filling out the scholarship application package:
You’ll have to write few essays. There is no set of rules to write the essays. Write what reflects you in the best way.
Please DO NOT beg, or show desperateness.
I suggest, you talk about your academic excellence, leadership roles, community involvements and extra-curricular activities since you’ll not be able to mention those in any other ways.
Your achievements do not necessarily need to align with your intended subject of study.
If you want to get an idea about the past scholars and their achievements, you can visit this page.
Submit the scholarship application package before deadline.
TOEFL/ IELTS/ SAT:
Your TOEFL/ IELTS score DOES NOT affect your scholarship decision. This is JUST a requirement i.e. if the university asks for a minimum overall of 6.5 in IELTS, it does not change a thing if you get a 8.5.
Take any one between IELTS and TOEFL. Go for the one you are comfortable with.
Canadian universities DO NOT require SAT. You can still provide them your SAT score if you aced it. This also DOES NOT affect your scholarship decision.
Final Steps:
You’ll have to complete the application for University of Toronto too. Note that the university application decision and the scholarship application decision are independent of each other. The scholarship committee looks at the academic transcripts you provide during the university application.
If you are applying during your final year at high school, you must provide all the academic transcripts from grade 9 to final year of high school, including the SSC/ O’ level and AS transcripts. You’ll also need to provide a prediction score for HSC/A’ level/ IB diploma. For national curriculum students, test exam results can be used as prediction score for HSC.
If you are applying after graduating from high school, you’ll need to provide all the academic transcripts from grade 9 to final year of high school, including the HSC/ A2/ IB diploma transcripts.
You must get ‘Yes’ from both the scholarship committee and the university enrolment service to receive the scholarship award.
Which campus? Which college? What major? Please research on your own. These are completely your choice. You can change majors after coming to UofT. So, no worries.
Submit the university application package before deadline.
Check your emails at least once a week. The admission committee might ask for additional documents if required.
Expect the scholarship decisions to come out by the end of March.
Few points:
Email the university whenever you are in confusion. They are really nice and helpful.
Do not go to any agency, or anything of that sort. You yourself is enough to complete the application process. For extra guidance, PBSCU is always there for you.
